BAM-B001 is the first certified reference material for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in rubber/toys. With its relevant PAH contents, BAM-B001 supports the monitoring of the current maximum level of 0.5 mg/kg for certain PAH congeners according to Regulation (EU) No 1272/2013 amending Annex XVII of the REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 and thus contributes to consumer protection.

BAM-B001 was developed within the framework of a BAM in-house certification project on the basis of the analysis procedure AfPS GS 2019:01 PAH, which is to be used for PAH testing of consumer and toy products for the award of the GS mark according to the German Product Safety Act (ProdSG). The analytical determination of PAH is based on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) using stable isotope labelled internal standards.

PAHs are among the priority organic pollutants in environmental matrices, food and consumer products including toys. The latter group is mainly at risk from contaminated plastic and rubber parts. For example, PAHs may be present as impurities in raw materials (in particular in extender oils and carbon black) used in the manufacture of consumer products/toys.

Exposure to PAHs with human carcinogenic properties leads to increased risks to human health - infants and young children are a high-risk group due to their oral behaviour. Reliable monitoring of the chemical composition of consumer products/toys is therefore a key requirement for ensuring product safety.

BAM-B001 is available from BAM in a brown glass bottle (outer packaging: cardboard round tin) containing 10 g at a price of € 419,- plus VAT.
