The use of automobile catalysts is necessary to comply with international limits for exhaust emissions of cars. The catalysts normally are made of a ceramic hollow piece plated with the platinum group elements platinum, palladium and rhodium as active components. The precious metals contained in the catalysts represent a considerable value, therefore high demands on precision and accuracy of the analysis are following. For that reason a few years ago BAM certified the reference material ERM®-EB504 and later ERM®-EB504a. This CRM is no longer available. Aim of the certification of the reference material BAM-M504b was to certify a suitable subsequent material with certified mass fractions of the precious metals Pt, Pd und Rh with small uncertainties. The CRM is produced using a used cordierite based car catalyst with mass fractions of (1159 ± 8) mg/kg of platinum, (1128 ± 9) mg/kg of palladium and (314,2 ± 2,6) mg/kg of rhodium. The material is available in form of powder (particle size < 0,1 mm) in bottles containing 200 g. It is intended as a tool for laboratories for development, validation and quality control of analytical methods for the determination of platinum group elements in automobile catalysts.
